Driving in Mauritius and what you need to know

Driving in Mauritius (british system) & foreign driving licence permitted to drive in Mauritius

Anyone planning to come to Mauritius and willing to move around the island in a car, needs to be aware of the country’s driving regulations. The Mauritian driving system has inherited some of the British habits – people drive on the left side of the road and give way to traffic coming from the right.

The average speed limit is 40 km/h in the city, 80 km/h on the main roads, and 110 km/h on some parts of the highway. Driving in Mauritius is not complicated for seasoned and moderate drivers. Roads are practical and traffic signage will either warm or inform you of the street you’re taking. Tourists and travellers can drive using their local driver’s licence in Mauritius, but for a period of four weeks only. Most car rental companies require an International Driver’s Permit to support the original driver’s licence. As such, it is recommended to apply and obtain a valid international driver’s licence from the country of origin before coming to the island, to act as a supporting document. An International Driver’s Permit can be obtained by any foreigner, as long as you are 18 years old and a native driver’s licence holder.
